How To Stop Panic Attacks

by Jack Collins

People are affected by panic attacks in lots of ways. And there’s just as many different panic attack cures. If you’ve suffered from a panic attack, you know how helpless and out of control you feel. Panic attacks can strike suddenly or build up slowly over a few hours. And they can last from a few seconds to a couple of days. Only if you’ve experienced a panic attack can you really understand the feelings of discomfort. But, whether you suffer from mild to severe panic attacks, you need to know there are lots of ways to manage and cure these panic attacks.

Part of the trick is to prevent these panic attacks before you need panic attack cures. To do this, you need to get to the bottom of why you’re having the attacks. Once you are able to do that, the rest is easier than you would imagine. But finding the trigger for your panic attacks is not simple. It depends totally on what the cause is. But don’t worry. If you don’t find the root cause, there are still many ways to stop a panic attack.

Sometimes, if you change something about your situation as soon as you realize you are about to have an attack, you can stop it. Try deliberately hyperventilating. Have a cup of hot tea. You can drink a glass of cold water, then close your eyes and lay down. At times, going for a run can help. You can try some things that may seem silly, like singing a song or whistling. Whenever you do find something that seems to work for you, be sure to remember it and use it the next time you start to feel a panic attack coming on. These may control the symptoms, and in time, they may work as full panic attack cures for you.

You may find that your panic attack triggers are caused by a physical condition and you should be able to stop the triggers by treating the condition. If the trigger is because you’re anxious or have a phobie, then find treatment for the phobia or cause of your anxiety. It may not be the complete cure for your panic attacks, it’ll help you get a bit more control of your situation.

Taking small steps to control your panic attacks is one of the best ways. You can take back control of your life as well.

Bipolar Medication

by Gary Pearson

There is no cure for bipolar disorder, but there are several types of bipolar medication that can help manage the disease. The emphasis of the treatment of bipolar disorder is on effective management over the long term of the illness.

You also have a number of psychological methods other than the medicines to treat the condition. The two important techniques are behavior modification and counseling.

Most people with bipolar disorder require a combination of bipolar medications, with little evidence supporting the idea that alternative or complementary treatments used alone work well for the long term treatement of the disease.

The main job of the bipolar medications is to decrease depression and agitation bouts in the patient. These medicines are also known as mood stabilizers. Some of the medicines which are suggested for bipolar disorder by the doctors are lamotrigine, lithium, anticonvulsants like valproic acid and carbamazepine.

Antipsychotic which is also a medicine for bipolar patients are used for treating mania. There are some other bipolar medicines like olanzapine, Quetiapine, and risperidone. In most cases it is easier to treat, as well as put off incidence of maniac feelings with the help of mood stabilizing drugs. Fluoxetine, lamotrigine, and quetiapine have been very effective in the treatment of bipolar depression.

In most cases bipolar medications have some side effects. Problems like memory loss, nausea, diarrhea, increase in weight etc can be faced by patients taking Lithium. It may not manifest itself when mild dose is taken but can be an issue for people taking a strong dose of these medicines.

Sedation, increase in weight, disturbances in electrolyte, and there are some more side effects of anticonvulsant medications. Problems like hyperglycemia, weight increase and restlessness can result from bipolar medication which is antipsychotic in nature.

One may find it difficult to decide on which medicine is more effective as the bipolar medication works in a very different way for each sufferer and is also dependant on episodes. The doctor should wait for at least four weeks after the medicine has been introduced before coming to any conclusion and it is not possible to get immediate relief also.

Natural Remedies for Losing Weight - 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP)

by Keith Woolley

Do you ever feel like you know just enough about 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) to be dangerous? Let’s see if we can fill in some of the gaps with the latest info from 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) experts.

If you base what you do on bad information, you might be surprised by the consequences. Make sure you get the whole 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) story from ithe best peer-reviewed sources.

Another natural remedy for losing weight that has raised a few eyebrows is a substance called 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). In fact, its been called into question for its safety record. 5-HTP actually replaced tryptophan supplements banned due to its link to a rare and potentially deadly blood disorder. Also, there has been a difference of opinion on whether or not it is actually a viable substance for achieving weight loss. Now, having said that, 5-HTP is found in some over-the-counter natural remedies for losing weight.

5-HTP is used to make serotonin for normal nerve and brain function. Lack of enough 5HTP can affects sleep, emotional moods, pain control, inflammation, intestinal peristalsis where it acts as a stimulant, and numerous other body functions. It’s found in the cells of the brain - where it acts as a neurotransmitter speeding nerve impulses between synapses) and intestine and in platelets in our blood. When walls of blood vessels are damaged, serotonin is released from platelets to constrict the vessel and prevent hemorrhage.

The human body doesn’t make a lot of this. 5-HTP is derived from the seeds of a West African plant called Griffonia simplicifoli. Dieters who use this product claim it helps suppress appetite, and helps promote weight loss.

Initial research says 5-HTP is noted for its ability to reduce appetite by stimulating serotonin production in the brain. Clinical trials have appetite reduction and weight loss (averaging 11 pounds in 12 weeks) with 600 to 900 mg daily. Trials using 5-HTP did show that some people taking large amounts of 5-HTP had nausea, headaches, sleepiness, muscle pain, or anxiety.

With this natural remedy for losing weight, and others as well, you must change your eating habits and increase exercise. It will not work all that well just on its own. In addition, if you happen to be pregnant or nursing, check with a Doctor, as there is no research in this area to indicate whether it is safe to take this substance under these circumstances. Try not to get taken in with the common belief that if it is natural, it won’t hurt you. Nothing could be further from the truth. Get as much information as you can before you decide to try anything.

Of course, it’s impossible to put everything about 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) into just one article. But you can’t deny that you’ve just added to your understanding about 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) , and that’s time well spent.

Strip That Fat Tag Is A New Diet Game Where The Loser Wins

by Edwin Strong

Everything today has a ‘tag’ on it,whether it be a price to pay,an indicator of importance,a nickname,or one who is caught out being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Even criminals are excused real punishment after agreeing to wear an ‘electronic tag’.

There is another type of ‘tag’ that is extremely hurtful,at whatever age. This is the tag of ‘fat ridicule’ that can take the target down from a great distance. Whether it’s the playtime ‘touch game’ where you are first to be ‘got’,adult playful comment or just plain bullying. If you are ‘fat tagged’, you are a target figure and no matter how much you are able to rise above it, kid yourself that it doesn’t matter, ridicule, major or minor, hurts big time.

There can be nothing worse than to have an overweight dinner guest who feels it their duty to bore the pants off fellow diners, by intimately detailing how they lost 18 pounds (around 8 kilograms in metric fat) over two years. Though politely nodding and reassuringly admiring by return, that person is immediately mentally ‘tagged’ as the dinner guest not to invite next time. It’s not just informal gatherings where the ‘fat tag’ comes into play but also in the general run of day socialising.

Unwanted weight gain is like a black cloud that follows most of us around and so we ‘understand’ weight gain and how easily it occurs. Instinctively we admire those that lose weight sensibly and return to a healthy build. If you have lost a lot of weight,it shows in the way you present to others, your talk, your walk, your confidence and self-esteem. The effect is very much that of a ‘desert flower’ blooming again as rain falls. What is needed now is to appreciate the calorie difference between a desert and a dessert but drink more water anyway.

There are times when we are stripped bare or half clothed. Either way, whether it is prior to lovemaking, daily bathing, beach lounging or dressing,we see our ‘bodily’ self. The conscious reaction to seeing oneself could be to:- (1) Kid our-self that what we see is not that bad (2) Shudder and shake our heads in disbelief at what we have become (3) Admire our-self, what we are or what we have physically achieved

This ’self’ is our deep rooted personal identity and how we see our ’self’ holds the keys to our mental balance. It is that important. Seeing our ’self’ as an individual that has hidden depths and strength of character makes us that person. Psychologists can dig deep on this one but if we see our ’self’ as a weak and submissive individual as that’s the easy way, then we will also become that weak person and living with your ’self’ gets harder for it.

Ridicule hurts, period. It is in our quiet times of self reflection that the ‘fat-tag’ hurt most. Despair loves an invitation to visit and rapidly descends on you with a lot of mental baggage. There are many layers to our despairing thought process and the sub-conscious is responsible for much pain. So it is with too much fat, each added layer measured in degrees of sadness but fat loss brings disproportionate satisfaction.

Our self-esteem is badly damaged if we see our ’self’ as anything other than ‘up to scratch’, being our self-measurement against others. We cannot all make millions but we can feel super-good about our ’self’ and what we have achieved. So,where the ‘fat tag’ is concerned, we have to strip the fat and remove some of the lardy layers that weigh heavily on our minds. The trick is not to see our-self as impossibly overweight but possibly overweight. We can deal with ‘possibly overweight’ as that self-impression leaves the door open for improvement.

Depression -Do You Have These Symptoms?

by Harold Ulvaeus

You probably know someone who is depressed. You may be wondering about yourself. The way you feel right now–does it fit the definition of depression? Clinical depression is a serious illness that affects millions, so you are right to be concerned. Understanding depression is a good first step toward treatment. Let’s see if we can figure this out together.

First of all, having days when you feel down, or sad, is normal. We all have days when we feel blue, or down. It is just part of life. If those sad, blue feelings become your most predominant feelings however, like a dark persistent cloud, your emotions may not be just a “mood” but depression.

Depression is an illness, a mental disorder that overwhelms your mind and body. It is not a transient mood that can be dismissed. The victim of depression is powerless to command it to leave. It changes how you think and how you feel. It essentially changes who you are and affects how you interact with others.

Since normal feelings of sadness, and the feelings of depression are very similar, differentiating between the two is usually by time and intensity. The feelings from depression are much more intense than a normal reaction to a negative event.

The threshold for diagnosing depression in terms of time seems to be about two weeks. Being sad and withdrawn for a short period of time is a normal human reaction to significant negative events. However, if your personality and interaction with others fails to return to normal after about two weeks time, then you may have entered a major depressive episode. Depression can last for weeks, months or even years–without treatment.

How is depression treated? The good news is that depression is very treatable. Combining therapy with medication is usually quite effective. Investigating some of the newer “Energy Therapies” such as Emotional Freedom Techniques or Tapas Acupressure Technique can bring some impressive results and can be done in conjunction with traditional methods.

Depression can affect anyone. It is not a disorder for “weak” people. If you feel you may have depression, do not hesitate to seek help. The sooner you do, the sooner you can get back to your old self again.

Need to Lose 10 Pounds Fast? Somersize! CLICK HERE!!

by Jessica A. Andersen

Do you remember Chrissie from threes company? This is her diet plan. Suzanne Somers is now a nutrition and fitness expert. She started with a thigh Master has continued to develop products her latest, the Somersize diet.

The Somersize diet has stolen many successful ideas from very effective, popular diets. The diet requires you to eat foods in specific combinations in order to lose weight. Your body and your metabolism is retrained because junk food and greasy meals have ruined your metabolism and thrown your body out of whack.

The Somersize plan blames white flour for the problem. Foods created with white flour are high on the glycemic index. This means that consuming these foods will increase insulin production in the body. We get hungry more often and overeat to maintain energy levels.

Ms. Summers drafted this diet plan right after she wrote her book get skinny on fabulous food. While criticized as a gimmick thousands of people have benefited from using this diet. did, however, is not a complete plan but it does offer a helpful list of foods that you should eliminate from your diet.

The plan divides food into four groups. The first group is the protein/fats group. It combines these two food types because protein and fat in combination leads to slower digestion of the food. The veggie group is self-explanatory. Most veggies can be eaten as long as they don’t contain a lot of starch. This still leaves a large pool to pick from.

The next group is the carbohydrate group. White flour carbohydrates are frowned upon. However, any carbohydrate derived from healthier grains like whole-grain is always the best choice. Dieters are encouraged to eat cereal cheese and milk but to avoid varieties with excessive fat in favor of those with better ingredients.

The last group is fruit group. these are a great source of healthy sugars. No fruits are off-limits but you must not add any sweeteners to your fruit. Now this diet like many others requires you to limit actually eliminate certain foods.

The guidelines are general. Fats and protein can be eaten together but can’t be eaten with carbohydrates. Vegetables are allowed to be eaten with fats and proteins and carbohydrates. Fruit should be eaten at the beginning of the day. There needs to be a span of several hours between a carbohydrate meal before eating one with proteins and fats. The Somersize plan is quite generic so participants definitely should do their research and be sure they understand the importance of portion control before beginning.

E-Therapy: Fraudulent or For Real?

by Christy Cuellar-Wentz

Online therapy, email therapy, virtual therapy, cyber-counseling, e-therapy: they all refer to therapy or counseling using the internet, most often by email. Online counseling is a powerful tool for helping people to gain insight and resolve the problems that interfere with the quality of their lives. Therapists typically use email exchanges in online counseling work, and may supplement them with phone sessions (if necessary or requested) at appropriate points in the process.

Pros: People often open up faster during internet exchanges than in face to face counseling. Writing about their feeling and thoughts can have a freeing effect, encouraging faster insight that an office setting.

The exchange of emails gives clients time to reflect on what they’ve written, and what the therapist has said in reply. This inherent time delay can be of great benefit in working through thoughts, feelings, decisions and beliefs.

Cyber-counseling is tremendously convenient. Clients are able to write wherever they are most comfortable, 24/7. There is no need to wait for normal “office hours” to send messages, and they are free to set their own pace.

Getting out of the house to a face-to-face counseling session can sometimes be daunting. Parents of infants and small children have day care to contend with, and other people may find that certain emotional and physical conditions make travel difficult. Even if there are no professional counselors in the area, an online counselor can be available to help right away.

Since online counseling consists of a series of email exchanges, the client and counselor both have permanent records of their “sessions.” These saved records give both counselor and client an opportunity to review and evaluate their work together.

Virtual counseling costs less than seeing a therapist or coach face-to-face. Clients are only charged for the time a counselor actually spends reading their emails, composing replies, or speaking with them on the phone. All transportation costs are also eliminated.

Cons: In online therapy or phone sessions, therapists cannot watch facial expressions and other behaviors to better understand what a client is feeling. It is possible to have misunderstandings. Because of this, online counseling is NOT easy for the therapist, despite the fact that it costs the client far less than traditional therapy.

Clients need to be able to put their thoughts and feelings into writing, and write about themselves in a fairly articulate way.

Online work is inappropriate for some clients, including people who are currently in crisis or feel suicidal, people with serious emotional problems; people under the age of 18.

Unlike traditional psychotherapy, online counseling cannot provide formal diagnosis and treatment.

Cyber-counseling is relatively new, and naturally experimental.

Online counseling should not be embraced because of its pioneering nature any more than it should be avoided because it strays from the traditional path. Today’s technological leaps can empower people with access to therapy that is cost-effective, convenient and competent. It is well worth exploring to discover if this therapy may be a good choice for you or someone you love.

Basic Tips to Avoid a Panic Attack

by Neo Miley

Millions of panic attack sufferers around the world are looking for ways to avoid having attacks, and many want to find a solution that does not involve harsh drugs.

Do you remember some of the old movie scenes where a person would be breathing heavily and someone nearby would hand them a brown paper bag help calm their breathing? Well, we always just dismissed those things as hyperventilating from being nervous. However, the fear associated with panic attacks goes way beyond just hyperventilating.

Panic attacks can pretty occur at any time and in any place so finding out how to avoid attacks can often cause great stress. Some experts state that a large portion of panic attacks are based on imaginary fears and that they can be controlled once the victim of these attacks understands that concept.

These thoughts or “fake fears” can pop up during what might be considered a very ordinary time. You may be driving down a road or shopping at the mall when all of a sudden you are overtaken by uncontrolled thoughts, anxiety and panic.

An endless number of thoughts along those lines can help to launch a panic attack. You realize the thoughts are not reality yet you think about them, you get anxious, and eventually it turns into a repeating cycle of thoughts, nervousness and anxiety that leads to a panic attack.

Sometimes, you may be unaware that you are actually having a panic attack unless you have gone through it many times in the past. Some of the the physical signs that my manifest during a panic attack are…

1. Hard Breathing

2. Rapid Heartbeats

3. Vertigo

4. Stomach Might Feel Ill

5. Head or Neck Aches

6. Chest Tightness

There could be some clear emotional signs and triggers as well…

1. Unexplained Aggression

2. Fear of Death

3. Very Sad Feelings

4. Constantly Nervous

5. Feeling lonely

As mentioned earlier, many panic attacks are brought on due to constant thoughts that may or may not be true but your mind continually thinks about them until it reaches a boiling over point and the result is a panic attack. If you learn how to control these thoughts, and realize that what you are worried about is probably not going to happen, you stand a far greater chance of eliminating panic attacks and living a more normal life.

If you would like additional information on how to avoid panic attacks and a one move technique that could change your life, read the story of a fellow panic attack sufferer…Panic Away by Joe Barry.
